Hepatologist: the liver and intestines do not need regular cleansing.

Contrary to popular belief, the liver and intestines do not require additional regular cleansing, said hepatologist, gastroenterologist, and candidate of medical sciences Sergey Vyalov.

The doctor emphasized that if internal organs needed regular cleansing, the body would surely have figured out how to do it. According to him, the liver copes well with the function of self-cleansing without additional external help. Moreover, some procedures can harm the health of the organ.

One should not get carried away with intestinal cleansing either, Vyalov continued. Hydrocolon therapy, the use of laxatives and sorbents, mono diets, and enemas made from herbal infusions and oils technically help to empty the intestines, but there is no benefit from these methods, he warned.

"After the very first meal, the intestines will begin to fill up again with the appropriate contents — that is what they are designed for," the specialist explained. Furthermore, according to him, such procedures can wash away beneficial microbiota, the restoration of which will be difficult.
