Analysts claim that a marketing specialist's salary in Paris cannot satisfy the appetites of the character from the popular show.
In December 2025, the fifth season of the popular Netflix comedy series "Emily in Paris" was released. As the streaming giant announced the renewal of the show for a sixth season, the French capital once again witnessed a surge of interest from its fans.
However, while observing the luxurious life of the main character, many viewers do not realize that in reality, Emily could not afford all of this.
Emily's Salary Does Not Match Her Expenses
As reported by the Daily Mail, citing estimates from a digital marketing agency, working as a marketing specialist in Paris, Emily could earn around £36,300 a year (about €42,000). However, research shows that this would be insufficient to maintain the expensive lifestyle of the character.
For instance, renting an apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris, similar to the one Emily lives in, would realistically cost about £24,477 a year (around €28,000). Additionally, her utility bills would amount to £1,752 a year (about €2,000).
Moreover, the character often dines at Parisian restaurants, and visiting them at least twice a week would cost her £2,393 a year (around €2,760).
For other expenses, such as regular taxi rides around the city, going to bars at least twice a week, and daily cups of coffee, Emily would spend about £3,300 a year (around €3,800).
At the same time, the girl frequently appears in public wearing clothes from luxury brands, from Chanel to Hermès. One of the most expensive items in her wardrobe is a yellow printed jacket by Vassilis Zoulias from the second season, which costs £39,878 (around €46,000), more than the character's estimated annual salary. Overall, experts estimate that Emily's expenses on her luxurious wardrobe amount to about £56,698 a year (around €65,000).
She Would Be in Huge Debt
Based on the figures mentioned above, maintaining Emily Cooper's Parisian lifestyle would cost more than £90,000 a year (around €104,000), which would realistically lead the character to debts of over £50,000 (around €58,000).
Therefore, those who wish to emulate the main character of "Emily in Paris" would require significant financial investments.
What Else Is Wrong with "Emily in Paris"
As reported by UNIAN.Tourism, an American, similar to Emily, living in Paris, visited a local restaurant Terra Neva, where scenes from Gabriel's restaurant were filmed. According to her, this restaurant is a typical tourist trap that serves Italian cuisine rather than French.
In turn, British Anna Richards, who has been living in the French city of Lyon for several years, shared whether the life of foreigners in France resembles that of the series "Emily in Paris."
