Saffron-based supplement reduces inflammation in Parkinson's disease.

A saffron-based supplement may reduce inflammation and improve mental health in people with Parkinson's disease. This conclusion was reached by the authors of a randomized clinical trial, published in the journal Food & Function (F&F).

The triple-blind placebo-controlled study involved 92 patients with Parkinson's disease. Over 12 weeks, one group received 100 milligrams of saffron powder daily, while the other received a placebo. At the end of the observation period, participants taking saffron showed a significant decrease in C-reactive protein levels—a key marker of systemic inflammation—as well as improvements in cognitive performance.

In addition, patients experienced reduced anxiety, depression, and subjective distress, improved sleep quality, and decreased fatigue. Positive changes were also noted in quality of life indicators, including mobility, ability to perform daily activities, and overall well-being. No side effects were reported during the study.

The authors attribute the observed effect to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the bioactive compounds in saffron. They emphasize that this should not be seen as a replacement for standard therapy; however, the findings indicate the potential of saffron as a safe adjunctive treatment for Parkinson's disease and justify the need for further clinical research.
