A Reddit user with the nickname LogsKody94 shared how she learned about the side effect of a cough remedy from her own experience. It happened right at work — on a day when her throat had been hurting since the morning.
“I really didn’t want to be that colleague who sounds like a dying accordion, so I grabbed a bag of cough drops and went on with my day. At first, everything was great. Every time my throat tickled, I would eat another drop. Meeting? Another one. Phone call? Another. Sitting quietly at my desk? Another candy. I didn’t really think about how many I had swallowed because, well... they’re just cough drops,” she recalled.
By lunchtime, she felt a slight discomfort in her stomach, which soon turned into a full-blown problem. The girl wrote that she “rushed to the bathroom with the focus of an Olympic athlete.”
“While sitting on the toilet and doubting all my life choices, I did what any modern person does in a crisis: I typed a couple of queries into a search engine. That’s when I learned that many cough drops contain sweeteners that have a laxative effect when consumed in excess. Excessive. Which, of course, I had been doing up to that point,” she concluded.
