Holding back tears can lead to eyelid spasms.
Ophthalmologist Dmitry Dementyev and neurologist, PhD Olga Furman spoke about the dangers of holding back tears.
"Holding back tears can lead to dangerous consequences. If we hold back tears, what can happen? With a lack of tears, dry eye syndrome develops," said Dementyev.
According to him, insufficient tear production can provoke spasms of the eyelids and extraocular muscles. "When a person tries to forbid themselves from crying, they reflexively squeeze their eyelids, and this reflexive squeezing can cause spasms," the specialist explained. He added that ultimately, holding back tears leads to retinal dystrophy — a pathological process in which retinal cells are destroyed.
Furman also noted that a person who holds back tears suppresses their emotions. Sooner or later, this can lead to panic attacks, as well as anxiety and depressive disorders, the doctor warned.
