Adolescent conflicts with fathers and friends accelerate the aging of the body.

Conflicts with fathers and hostile behavior towards friends in adolescence may accelerate biological aging. This conclusion was reached by psychologists from the University of Virginia (UVA). A 17-year study involving 123 adolescents showed that those who frequently had strained relationships with their fathers and behaved aggressively towards close friends between the ages of 13 and 20 had a more 'aged' biological profile by the age of 30. This was reported on the university's website.

To assess the state of the body, the researchers used a comprehensive indicator that includes cholesterol levels, blood pressure, sugar, inflammatory markers, and proteins — one of the most accurate predictors of longevity and disease risk. Interpersonal conflicts, especially with fathers, were most strongly associated with accelerated physiological 'wear and tear'.

According to the study's author, Professor Joseph Allen, conflict with a father may be perceived by an adolescent as more intense and threatening than conflict with a mother, which increases stress and affects the functioning of the cardiovascular and immune systems. Hostility towards friends at the age of 20 also had a significant impact, reflecting on aging biomarkers years later.

The researchers emphasize that difficult relationships during adolescence are not just an emotional problem but an important signal of risks for long-term health. Creating a healthy family and friendship environment may play a much more crucial role in preventing premature aging than is commonly believed.
