Gynecologist: the smell of rotten fish from the genitals appears in vaginosis.

An unpleasant smell from the genitals can occur in women due to problems with intimate health, said Ilona Agrba, a candidate of medical sciences and gynecologist.

Agrba explained that normally the smell of the intimate area should be neutral or slightly sour. If it has become strong and reminiscent of the aroma of rotten fish, this may be a sign of bacterial vaginosis, where the balance of the vaginal microflora is disturbed. In addition to the smell, the disease will be indicated by liquid foamy or grayish discharge. Usually, there will be no redness, itching, or pain.

Another cause of unpleasant smell from female genitals is candidiasis, also known as thrush, the gynecologist noted. In this case, the problem can be easily recognized by the specific strong sour smell and curd-like discharge, accompanied by itching, redness, and irritation.

"The specific smell from the genitals can also be caused by some sexually transmitted infections. For example, in trichomoniasis, abundant greenish-foamy discharge may have an unpleasant odor, while in gonorrhea, they will be overtly purulent and foul-smelling," Agrba warned.
