Regular physical exercises at home reduce knee pain in osteoarthritis.
A new study conducted by researchers from Mass General Brigham has shown that regular home exercises can significantly reduce knee pain in individuals with osteoarthritis and meniscus damage. The work, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), revealed that patients who performed a 25-minute stretching and muscle strengthening routine four times a week reported noticeable pain relief within a few months.
Particularly good results were observed in those who combined home exercises with a course of physical therapy. However, as the researchers found, the additional improvement may have been related not so much to the therapy methods as to the support and motivation that patients received through personal interaction with the physical therapist.
The scientists emphasize that even simple regular exercises without medications can be an effective and safe way to maintain joint health and alleviate chronic pain.
