Reducing sitting time by half an hour improves metabolism.

Scientists from the University of Turku (Finland) have found that reducing sitting time by just half an hour a day significantly improves the body's ability to use fats and carbohydrates for energy production. The study, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports (SJMSS), showed that even light activities such as a short walk or standing while on a call help restore what is known as metabolic flexibility — the body's ability to switch between energy sources.

The experiment involved 64 sedentary individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. After six months, those who reduced their sitting time by at least 30 minutes showed improved metabolic markers and the ability to burn fat during light physical activity.

The authors emphasize that the positive effect is particularly pronounced in individuals with excess weight and low physical activity. Even a minimal reduction in sitting time can be the first step toward preventing diabetes and heart diseases.
