Hot coffee may be a cause of esophageal cancer — warn scientists

The habit of drinking coffee or tea that is too hot may not be as harmless as it seems. As reported by the Daily Mail, a study by the American National Cancer Institute published in the British Journal of Cancer revealed a concerning link between the temperature of beverages and the risk of developing cancer.

Scientists have found that regularly consuming six to eight cups of very hot coffee or tea a day increases the likelihood of developing squamous cell esophageal cancer by more than 5.5 times. Even more moderate consumption — up to four cups a day — can increase the risk by 2.5 times. If a person drinks more than eight cups of hot beverages daily, the likelihood of the disease approaches six times.

According to researchers, it is worth reconsidering the habit of drinking coffee or tea immediately after brewing. The optimal option is to let the beverage cool slightly before consumption to avoid thermal damage to the esophageal mucosa, which is believed to provoke oncological processes.
