66-year-old Erin Sullivan-Wagner from the UK claims that she contracted the 'most shameful' type of cancer, after which she had to divorce her husband and hide her diagnosis for several years. Her story was published by the Daily Mail.
Sullivan-Wagner said that it all started 20 years ago with a small drop of blood on toilet paper. Very soon the bleeding intensified, she went to the hospital and learned that she had anal canal cancer. The woman added that the surgeon-proctologist who examined her immediately stated that he had only seen such cases in homosexual men before.
Sullivan noted that upon hearing the diagnosis, she felt as if she had become mute: she was afraid to assert her rights in the hospital and was embarrassed to talk about her illness with friends and family. In addition, after successful treatment, she had to divorce her husband. According to her, the reason was complications from radiation therapy that made her unable to have sex. "The radiation destroyed not only the cancer cells but also severely damaged the vaginal tissues," she explained.
However, after a few years, the couple reunited. Sullivan insists that she has re-evaluated her attitude not only towards married life but also towards the illness. She founded a public organization that aims to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment.
