Facial puffiness and excess weight can be signs of alcoholism.
The first signs of alcoholism are reflected not only in behavior but also in appearance, warned gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh.
According to the doctor, alcoholic beverages dilate blood vessels, causing the nose and cheeks to redden and become covered with a network of capillaries. Additionally, due to fluid retention, there is general puffiness, facial swelling, as well as bags and bruises under the eyes.
Another sign that may indicate alcoholism, Kashukh noted, is excess weight. This is explained by the high calorie content of alcoholic beverages and their ability to stimulate appetite. However, in the later stages of addiction, as the gastroenterologist pointed out, weight sharply decreases due to frequent hangovers and inevitable problems with the liver and pancreas.
