The singer allegedly had hygiene issues. Some of Michael Jackson's household habits led to the King of Pop being nicknamed "Smelly."
As reported by The Independent, legendary American singer Lionel Richie shared this in his memoirs "Truly." According to him, Jackson was very close to his family, but at a certain point, he went into "free sailing":
"His everyday life could be described as eccentric. Like a scatterbrained professor, but at the same time a child."
Richie recalled how American composer and arranger Quincy Jones often teased Jackson by calling him "Smelly." "Michael laughed too, realizing that he hadn’t noticed he hadn’t changed or ironed his clothes for several days. We all have our strange habits," the singer added.
According to the musician, Jackson's poor hygiene was a result of his immense popularity, as he was constantly touring and had little time even for mundane tasks. Moreover, he couldn't simply take his clothes to the dry cleaners, as they often didn’t return his items—everyone kept something as a memento:
"When Michael came to see me, he was wearing whatever—jeans and a t-shirt. The jeans either sagged or were too short, and, well... they smelled funny."
The publication reminds that five of Jackson's former housekeepers previously described him as "the dirtiest and most unhygienic person in Hollywood."
Last year, Michael Jackson topped one of the rankings of the most famous people of all time.
