A lack of water in the body causes morning fatigue.
A lack of water in the body can worsen sleep quality and cause morning fatigue. This conclusion was reached by researchers at the University of Connecticut, with the results published in SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine (SN Compr Clin Med).
The study involved 18 male students who adhered to different water consumption regimes over four days. In a state of good hydration, they fell asleep faster and woke up more refreshed. With mild dehydration, participants slept on average an hour longer but reported difficulties falling asleep and more pronounced fatigue in the mornings.
The scientists measured hydration levels by the color and composition of urine, as well as changes in body weight, which confirmed the link between the amount of water consumed and sleep quality.
The authors note that even a mild degree of dehydration is characteristic of many people in everyday life and may explain feelings of fatigue and difficulties with nighttime rest. In the future, researchers plan to study how a lack of water affects the immune system, especially in children and pregnant women.
