Has the series really been renewed for a third season?
Despite audience interest, the third season remained in question for a long time. Back in 2019, the show's creator David E. Kelley stated that a continuation was not planned. It seemed that the story was definitively concluded, but over time the situation changed. In 2020, Nicole Kidman repeatedly hinted that discussions about the third season were ongoing and that there were already interesting ideas for it. In October of the same year, the actress confirmed that David and writer Liane Moriarty had a "very good idea" for a continuation, and the key actresses were interested in returning.
Later, interest in the project only grew. In 2022, Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon openly spoke about their desire to reunite, although they emphasized the difficulty of finding the right story after the intense finale. At the same time, the death of director Jean-Marc Vallée in 2021 was a serious blow to the team.
A turning point came in 2023 when Kidman effectively confirmed the development of a new season, stating that viewers would definitely see the third one. In 2024, she added that the process was moving forward and there was even a preliminary schedule. Together with Reese Witherspoon and other actresses, they decided that they could continue the story despite the loss of the director.
Witherspoon also confirmed work on the project, noting that they were actively collaborating with Kidman on developing the plot. The actress emphasized that Liane Moriarty plays a key role in the future of the series – the team is waiting for the continuation of the book to determine the direction of the story. According to Moriarty, the new installment will imply a time jump: the characters' children will have become teenagers, which will open up new plot possibilities and conflicts.
Who will be working on the creation?
In September 2025, it became known that the script for the pilot episode is being written by Francesca Sloan, who will also serve as an executive producer alongside Kidman, Witherspoon, and Kelley. Kelley himself confirmed in April 2026 that the team is coming together again, although details are not yet disclosed.
Despite the long delays related to the actors' schedules and finding the perfect story, all key participants in the project are showing a willingness to return. It is expected that the cast will once again include Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley.
Thus, although there is no official announcement from HBO yet, the third season of "Big Little Lies" looks more and more realistic with each passing year. The main question now is not whether there will be a continuation, but when exactly viewers will be able to return to the story of the women from Monterey.
