The government wants to further provide the "Gors" concert hall in Rēzekne to the residents of Latgale so that it operates not only in the narrow interests of the municipality, Prime Minister Evika Silīna told reporters on Wednesday.
The essence of the conflict is that the cultural center is under the maintenance of the local authority, which wants the concert hall to earn more by organizing commercial events. In Riga, they want it to serve as a platform for promoting Latvian culture.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister discussed the management of "Gors" with President Edgars Rinkēvičs. After the meeting, he told reporters that he supports the government's intention to transfer "Gors" more into state management.
The President emphasized that this is not about the state taking "Gors" away from Latgale or Rēzekne, but rather about highlighting the importance of "Gors" for strengthening the Latvian and Latgalian cultural space, as well as in the context of national security. It is also about finding ways to involve the state and Latgale more broadly in the development of cultural life.
According to the President, it is important that people are willing to visit the concert hall. "The goal is to help and support, but at the same time, to avoid any interference," said Rinkēvičs.
According to Silīna, the government wants the entire Latgale region to be involved in what "Gors" does. "We are looking for the best solutions and want the Rēzekne municipality to be part of this project," said Silīna.
If the municipality is not interested in cooperation and is seeking various ways to reject the proposal from the Ministry of Culture, then it is clear that the government needs to find an inclusive solution that will create as many opportunities as possible for the residents of Latgale, said the Prime Minister.
As reported earlier, a fund may be created for the management of the "Gors" concert hall involving both the state and the municipality.
