On one of the highways in the United Arab Emirates, drivers are in for a musical surprise: a section of the road 'plays' Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as you drive over it.
On the right lane of the E84 highway in the emirate of Fujairah, special textured strips have been installed. Their placement is precisely calculated: as the wheels move, they create vibrations that combine into the melody of the famous 'Ode to Joy'.
This project has become part of the international initiative Street of Music, aimed at promoting art in everyday life.
'We wanted the project to be established in our country,' said Ali Obaid Al Hefaiti, director of the Fujairah Academy of Fine Arts.
'The idea is to connect music and everyday life, to spread the culture of art,' he added in an interview with the Associated Press.
The Ninth Symphony is one of Beethoven's most famous works. The final part, 'Ode to Joy', continues to resonate around the world — from concert halls to films and advertisements.
