Latvian Puppet Theatre to Stage a Play About Loneliness

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, the Latvian Puppet Theatre will present the premiere of a play for youth and adults titled “Loneliness.” Does “not being alone” mean the same as “not being lonely”?

The creator of the performance, Anna Klishane, admits: “Recently, my grandmother asked me, ‘Aren’t you lonely at home?’ Before answering, I thought that loneliness spares no one. It sneaks up unnoticed, like a lion waiting for the right moment to pounce on its prey. Let’s not become victims of loneliness.”

Overall, the play poetically tells the story of loneliness in old age. The description of the play states: “[...] she sits in a chair and waits. Sometimes the numbers of the year and memories merge into one, but then they gather again into a lump from all corners of the house, like dust. She waits... For what? When someone opens the door or window, she waits for a spoken word, a caress, a glance. One can stop eating sweets, quit smoking, one can recover from the flu with medication prescribed by a doctor. But what is the remedy for loneliness? To go where you won’t be alone? But does not being alone mean the same as not being lonely?

The creator of the performance, Agris Natre, explains: “Whatever the path may be, it will eventually come to an end. And each of our companions has their own crossroads, their own turns and slopes, as well as their own length of road. What to do if the paths of our companions have been cut off or led us in a different direction? Can we continue to walk alone? And what if one of us no longer has the strength?”

Starring: Anna Klishane, Agris Natre.

The premiere is expected on February 13.
