Undoubtedly, cats are quite intelligent creatures. But are they capable of realizing that they are observing themselves in the mirror? Science answers this question.
The reaction of cats to their own reflection is indeed a fascinating sight. But who do they see in the mirror: themselves or a potential rival? Let's find out.
Mirror Test
To determine this, scientists have had to use complex tests and studies. One of the most famous experiments was conducted by psychologist Gordon Gallup in 1970. A special odorless red dye was applied to the animal's forehead, and then it was shown its reflection in the mirror. Gallup hypothesized that if the animal recognized itself, it would begin trying to wipe off the red spot.
Most animals could not pass this test; however, some did: dolphins, monkeys (gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and bonobos), and magpies. As you may have noticed, dogs and cats are not on this list.
Many species of monkeys successfully pass the mirror test, but not all. For example, macaques and langurs generally show no interest in their reflection and may perceive the mirror as a foreign object. This indicates that the level of self-awareness may vary depending on the species.
Despite the results of this study, it cannot be claimed that dogs and cats are so unintelligent that they cannot recognize themselves in the mirror. Scientists explain that these animals have a different mindset: they perceive the world around them not so much through sight as through touch and smell.
So, what do cats see in the mirror?
As we have already established, these pets see a stranger in the mirror. This explains their unusual reaction to what they see. At first, they show interest in their reflection and even sniff it, but soon they lose interest.
Why does the interest fade?
The fact is that over time, cats realize that the animal they see in the mirror poses no threat. Moreover, they understand that this 'other' cat is not real: it does not emit a smell, and it cannot be touched... Therefore, your pet begins to ignore its reflection, as it has already realized that it is merely an illusion.
