Can You Give Milk to Cats?

"Domestic cats love milk and sour cream" — this stereotype comes from cartoons where pets enjoy these products from a dish.

But can cats actually enjoy dairy products? This question was answered by veterinarian B. Kornreich from the USA.

Cats are mammals, and for a time, they feed their offspring with their milk. However, as they grow older, cats, like humans, lose the ability to digest lactose found in milk. Moreover, the milk protein casein can provoke allergic reactions in pets.

However, this does not mean that cats should completely avoid dairy. They can indulge in small amounts of milk, but only occasionally, not on a regular basis.

The veterinarian explained that if lactose is not broken down, all the milk sugar settles in the animal's gastrointestinal tract. There, fermentation occurs, resulting in gas production and water retention. As a result, the cat begins to suffer from bloating and diarrhea.

Moreover, it is not the diarrhea itself that poses a threat, but its consequences for the pet. If it lasts for a long time, it can lead to dehydration and a decrease in electrolyte levels in the blood. In such a situation, it is essential to take the animal to the veterinarian, the specialist concluded.
