Can You Plant Plums Next to Cherries: Rules of Neighboring

Proper neighboring of fruit and vegetable crops can significantly affect their yield.

Properly selected "neighbors" can increase the fertility of plants, while incorrect proximity can lead to the decline and death of trees or shrubs.

Cherry is not considered the best "neighbor" for many crops. This tree has a powerful root system that extends deep underground and can suppress nearby plants.

Plum and cherry can form a good tandem, so these trees can be planted close to each other. This is because both crops have similar requirements for growing conditions.

Both trees prefer loose soil with a neutral acidity level. Cherry and plum are light-loving, so they grow poorly in shaded conditions.

The main condition for their coexistence lies in the root system. They do not compete for soil resources, and the soil is depleted slowly.

The proximity of the crops does not affect yield, but there is an important downside. Both trees are susceptible to similar diseases and pests. This means that if the cherry gets sick, the plum can also become infected, and vice versa.
