There is an opinion that speed bumps pose a danger to pregnant women...
Road irregularities can pose a risk if crossed at speeds above 41 km/h. These conclusions were made by scientists from the University of British Columbia in Canada and published in the Journal of Biomechanics. The researchers created theoretical biomechanical models based on crash test data and information about the physical and physiological characteristics of women in the third trimester of pregnancy.
It turned out that high speed when crossing a speed bump can lead to increased pressure of amniotic fluid on the fetus. This can cause minor brain damage and abnormal acceleration of the fetal heart rate. For the expectant mother, such jolting can provoke contractions and increased uterine activity. The study showed that the safest speed is 25 km/h, while the upper limit is 41 km/h.
DID YOU KNOW?
The expression “speed bump” came into the Russian language from the USA, where this unofficial term appeared in the early 20th century. Artificial road irregularities were created by farmers to protect their livestock, which often found itself under the wheels of passing cars.
