Even if the snow appears clean and fresh at first glance, it is completely unsuitable for consumption, warns biologist Roman Oparin.
During snowfall, snow captures various pollutants from the air, including car exhaust, industrial emissions, and other harmful substances. The environment also affects its purity: wind can carry dust and chemicals, especially near roads where de-icing agents are used.
According to the expert, consuming snow can lead to gastrointestinal problems and cause allergic reactions. Icicles also pose a danger, as they may contain dust particles, rust, and chemicals accumulated from rooftops and other surfaces.
Additionally, snow can harbor microorganisms. Although low temperatures slow their reproduction, some bacteria and viruses can survive in extreme conditions. When entering the body, such microorganisms can cause infections.
