Eight Dietary Mistakes That Contribute to Belly Fat

Nutritionist Nika Sergunina explained what dietary mistakes can lead to gaining extra pounds. Here’s what to avoid.

Skipping Breakfast

This approach can lead to unplanned snacking throughout the day or overeating before bed. This will certainly affect waist size.

Going on Diets

Any dietary restrictions lead to weight gain after another "starvation" diet. According to a nutritionist, the reason lies in the brain's function responsible for self-preservation. When a person decides to lose weight and starts limiting food intake, the brain does not understand why the amount of food has suddenly decreased. It begins to store calories. Metabolism slows down so that the person expends less energy.

“Then the 'food search mode' is activated. All thoughts are focused only on this. Food starts to appear in dreams. And that's not all. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for self-discipline, willpower, and control, shuts down. A person loses self-control and begins to eat larger portions than before. And when they finally get to food, they devour everything due to prolonged hunger,” notes Sergunina.

Not Engaging in Physical Activity

Any physical activity requires significant energy expenditure and helps burn excess calories. If you don't have time for long workouts, start with 15 minutes a day, and you will notice significant changes.

Exercising Too Intensively

This is another extreme, according to the nutritionist. Many believe that simply exercising is enough for effective weight loss. However, we often overestimate the effectiveness of such activities and then excessively compensate for the energy expenditure with food, leading to overeating. It is best to combine regular physical activity with a balanced diet.

Eating Frequently and in Small Portions

Constant snacking raises insulin levels and activates the weight gain program. This not only harms the figure but can also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Only Eating Fat-Free Products

Fats are a source of energy. Fat-free products are less satiating. To satisfy hunger, a person increases portion sizes and the number of snacks, which ultimately leads to the accumulation of fat tissue.

Drinking Coffee with Syrups

The most common mistake when losing weight is ignoring "liquid" calories. For example, a pumpkin-flavored latte contains 185 g of sugar, which is equivalent to 46 teaspoons of this ingredient. One cup of such a drink contains 930 kcal and 194 g of carbohydrates.

Finishing Kids' Meals

“It often happens that little ones cannot finish their portion of food on their own. In this case, parents come to the rescue. And that's a mistake! Excess calories for adults will ultimately lead to extra centimeters around the waist,” emphasizes the expert.
