Professor Charles Spence from the University of Oxford noted that eating without utensils enhances its texture and flavor.
According to Spence, giving up the use of spoons and forks brings numerous health benefits. After all, in many cultures, dishes are traditionally eaten with hands.
“Think of burgers, tacos, nuggets, tortillas, wings. Why not make other foods just as delicious?” the professor asserts.
The scientist added that tactile contact with food influences the perception of smell and taste, providing more accurate information about the products than what we receive through sight alone, reports Al Jazeera.
“With hands, it’s easier to determine the degree of doneness, freshness, texture, or temperature of food. Warm fresh bread feels more pleasant in the hands, as does a boiled egg sprinkled with salt,” the professor believes.
Eating with hands is not just a tradition inherited from ancient civilizations. Various scientific studies have confirmed that this way of eating has its health benefits.
Firstly, it promotes increased production of digestive enzymes and juices in the mouth, improving the digestion process and reducing the risk of gas, bloating, and stomach upset. Secondly, it helps prevent overeating. Tactile sensations allow for better awareness of the texture, taste, and smell of food, which facilitates satiety.
Some studies show that when eating with hands, people eat more slowly. This helps slow down the pace of eating and aids in controlling blood sugar levels.
Moreover, when people eat with their hands, they strengthen their immune system thanks to beneficial bacteria residing on the skin and in the mouth. These microorganisms serve as a protective barrier against harmful infections.
