Lemon water has long become a symbol of a proper start to the day.

Does adding a few drops of lemon juice really make water healthier — or is it just a trend that will be forgotten sooner or later? Experts from Prevention compared the properties of plain water and lemon water.

Water is the Basis of Everything

Plain water remains the best way to maintain fluid balance in the body. Water regulates body temperature, blood pressure, brain and intestinal function, helps absorb nutrients, and flushes out toxins.

Even mild dehydration can reduce concentration, cause fatigue, and lead to headaches, so doctors have come up with a simple formula: men need about 3.5 liters of water a day, while women need about 2.5 liters. The required volume should come not only from drinking water but also from soups, teas, compotes, juices, and other liquid dishes and beverages.

Benefits of Lemon Water

Adding a slice of lemon to a glass of water is a simple way to increase fluid intake, as many people find it difficult to drink plain water. Additionally, lemon water becomes:

  • a source of vitamin C, which is essential for the immune system and improves skin condition;
  • supportive of digestion, as it stimulates the production of gastric juice;
  • preventive against kidney stones due to the citrate found in citrus fruits;
  • helpful in reducing bloating with potassium, which decreases fluid retention in the body.

When Lemon Water Can Be Harmful

Not everyone tolerates the acidity of lemon, orange, or other citrus fruits. In cases of gastritis, heartburn, or a sensitive stomach, it is better to stick to plain water.

Dentists also warn that frequent consumption of lemon water can damage tooth enamel, so it is recommended to drink acidic beverages through a straw and rinse the mouth with plain water afterward.

In the absence of contraindications, one can start the morning with a glass of warm water with lemon to kickstart metabolism, but during the day and evening, it is advisable to prefer plain water.

For variety, other ingredients can be added to the water.
