What Are Crab Sticks Made Of

Crab sticks are made from surimi, a minced meat of lean fish (such as pollock), which lacks a significant portion of vitamins and healthy fats. The product's taste and appearance of crab are attempted to be achieved using starch, vegetable oils, flavorings, salt, sugar, and colorants.

Due to the presence of chemical additives, crab sticks are not considered healthy.

How Crab Sticks Affect the Human Body

An excessive amount of starch in crab sticks reduces protein concentration and can cause blood sugar spikes—especially in people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, the constant consumption of seafood imitation with flavorings can lead to food dependency.

Why Crab Sticks Are Dangerous for Children

Pediatricians and nutritionists emphasize that crab sticks are contraindicated for children. The preservatives and flavor enhancers used in production can:

  • impair memory and attention;
  • reduce learning ability;
  • cause sleep disturbances and irritability.

According to specialists, due to the fragility of a child's nervous system, such additives have a stronger effect than on adults. Additionally, the product is considered a strong allergen.

Why Crab Sticks Are Sometimes Acceptable

The product can rarely be included in the diet, for example, in cases of calorie deficiency or to diversify the menu. However, it is important to maintain moderation: 1–2 sticks in a salad once a week will not cause harm, reported nutritionist Marina Utyaganova.
