As the study published in Nutrients showed, milk with dark chocolate improves speed and endurance in short sprints. Singaporean specialists found that the drink enhances sprint performance due to the antioxidants contained in flavonoids, which increase oxygen flow to the muscles and reduce fatigue.
The experiment involved 20 participants. After consuming milk with dark or white chocolate, they performed a series of short sprints. In the first case, just a few minutes later, the volunteers showed better results in the second series of sprints and experienced less fatigue.
According to the researchers, the combination of sugars and biologically active substances found in dark chocolate helps to recover energy more effectively and protects muscles from oxidative stress.
The scientists note that even small improvements — around 1% — can be significant for professional athletes.
