The claim that one must consume 2 liters of water daily is a misconception, nephrologist B. Kiroga stated in an interview with El Español.
According to the specialist, the kidneys require about 0.5 liters of water per day to eliminate toxic substances. Additionally, fluid is lost through breathing and sweating — this is approximately 800–1000 milliliters.
Thus, the total amount of water needed by the body is no more than 1.5 liters per day.
Furthermore, the doctor noted that a significant portion of water comes from food. Vegetables, fruits, and berries are particularly rich in moisture. At the same time, sweet carbonated drinks and store-bought juices are best avoided as they increase the risk of obesity. Alcohol should also be avoided — it has a harmful effect on the liver, the expert emphasized.
