A severe fire in Liepaja destroyed a wooden shed located between two private houses. The flames managed to damage the neighboring building, and local residents now recall suspicious individuals who often appeared near the structure.

A fire on Silk Street in Liepaja nearly resulted in even more serious consequences. A wooden shed located between two residential houses was completely burned down, and the flames managed to damage the neighboring building.

Local residents report that they initially heard loud bangs resembling firecracker explosions.

“It sounded like firecrackers were going off,” recalls Viya, whose property is adjacent to the fire site.

The woman was resting at home at the time and initially thought that teenagers were making the noise.

“I thought I should go out and see where it was coming from,” she recounts.

When Viya smelled smoke and saw the flames, the firefighters had already been called.

The fire started around six in the evening. According to rescuers, by the time the first unit arrived, the shed, which was about 29 square meters, was already fully engulfed in flames.

“Thanks to the prompt actions, we were able to localize and extinguish it very quickly,” reported the duty officer of the Liepaja division of the State Fire and Rescue Service, Arturs Jakubauskis.

If the firefighters had arrived later, the fire could have spread to the neighboring residential houses.

Despite the quick extinguishing efforts, one of the neighboring houses did sustain damage — part of the wall and the roof were affected. Additionally, Viya's outbuilding was flooded with water during the firefighting efforts. After the incident, the woman's husband and son tried to mitigate the damage and dry out their belongings.

The State Police is currently investigating the cause of the fire. However, local residents already have their own suspicions. According to Viya, the shed had long attracted outsiders.

“There were homeless people, the doors were broken. It’s been like that for many years,” the woman says.

She recalls that the doors of the building often remained open, and “anything could happen” around it. Now, only a pile of debris and trash remains from the shed.

It turned out that the building belonged to a woman who is now required to remove the burned structures within a specified timeframe. If this does not happen, the municipality will carry out the cleanup, and the costs will be charged to the owner.

The incident in Liepaja once again illustrates how abandoned or poorly monitored outbuildings can over time become not only a source of problems for neighbors but also a real fire hazard.
