The Riga City Court found a man guilty of murder during a robbery.
According to the announced sentence, he has been sentenced to 18 years in prison with three years of subsequent supervision, reports the State Police.
The court also ordered the defendant to pay 11,500 euros in compensation for moral damages to the victim's relative and an additional 3,500 euros to be paid to the state treasury — this amount was previously paid to the victim as compensation by the state.
According to the criminal case, in February 2024, the accused, driven by selfish motives, broke into a woman's apartment in Riga. To seize her money, he used violence, delivering at least three blows to the victim's face and at least three blows to her head with a blunt object, causing bodily injuries that are considered minor in nature.
Continuing his criminal actions with the intent to kill the woman and subsequently steal her money, the accused intentionally crushed the victim's neck organs with a blunt object, obstructing the oxygen supply to the airways, causing mechanical asphyxiation, which led to the woman's death.
After the woman's death, the accused took 90 euros in cash from her wallet and fled the scene.
