Today, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs traveled to Liepāja, where he visited the newly built prison.

This is the first prison built since the restoration of Latvia's independence, the presidential office proudly announced.

What did the president take away from the correctional facility?

"The aim of criminal policy is to protect public safety, restore justice, resocialize the convicted individual, and ensure that the convicted person and others comply with the law and refrain from committing new crimes. A modern penal system that can effectively achieve these goals is unthinkable without a suitable and safe environment for prisoners and especially for the staff who work daily with those serving sentences," stated President E. Rinkēvičs after touring the new prison.

He also believes that fair punishment achieves its goal only when the convicted offender truly reforms and does not commit new crimes in the future. For this, appropriate conditions are necessary—a safe, modern environment that meets human rights standards.

"Today, during my visit to the new Liepāja prison, I was convinced that the necessary prerequisites have been created for the most effective achievement of these goals, especially regarding the implementation of resocialization measures for prisoners and ensuring decent working conditions for the staff of the Prison Administration," the president reported.

His office is confident that the facility in Liepāja is the most modern and secure prison in the Baltic States and Northern Europe. The first inmates will be received in the spring of 2026, when the Prison Administration completes comprehensive equipping and training of the prison staff.
