The tragic accident that occurred on Monday near Kursiši claimed the lives of three people. Two more men with injuries were taken to the hospital. One of the relatives of the 17-year-old boy who survived agreed to share what his brother told him about the terrifying moment. Now the relatives hope that law enforcement will be able to prove who is responsible for the deaths of several people, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

The company was returning from Ruba — one of those in the car needed to get a doctor's note, said Gunars, the brother of the 17-year-old survivor. He shared the story he heard in a phone conversation with his brother from the hospital.

The young man was sitting in the back middle — next to him was a 75-year-old elderly woman and her 46-year-old son. In the front were another man and his adopted son.

Brother of the survivor:

"Before the stop, the one who was sitting next to him, who also survived, told the driver, the youngest of the deceased, to stop. [Degpunktā: 27-year-old guy?] Yes. Kristaps told [the passenger sitting next to the driver – ed. note] to stop at the stop. He wanted to let everyone out who was sitting in the back — the woman, the deceased man, and my brother. But he didn’t stop, started swearing, saying something. The driver replied: “We’ll get to the end, then deal with what you don’t like.” In the end, that [passenger — ed. note] just grabbed the wheel, jerked right into the ditch — that’s how it all happened.”

The passenger sitting next to him survived and was taken to the hospital with several serious injuries. It was also established that he was in a state of intoxication. Gunars said that in the hospital, upon learning of the tragic outcome, the man reacted violently and was allegedly transferred to a psychiatric hospital.

The 17-year-old boy continues treatment — he has a broken collarbone.

“He [the brother — ed. note] said that when the wheel was jerked, he realized that he couldn’t do anything anymore. Then he just slid under the front passenger seat — from the back row — and hurt his legs, received a mild traumatic brain injury,” the brother of the young man recounts.

“My brother said that the driver was the first to fly out — the same 27-year-old, then the elderly man, then my brother himself, and after him — that woman. And the news writes that there was supposedly a problem with control or something else, but everything was fine with that. Just a drunk person next to him — a complete idiot.”

“My brother was the only one who got up by himself and ran to help everyone — because the driver was still alive then. He was the first to run up to him, said he heard the last breath, and the driver turned all blue. To experience such a thing at 17 years old — it’s honestly very scary,” he added.

The surviving young man also ran up to the car passenger, but he was already dead — he couldn’t find a pulse. “I ran up to the woman — she seemed to say something, but he didn’t understand anything,” the brother adds.

Medics tried to resuscitate the woman, but unfortunately, without success. The passenger sitting in the front remained trapped in the car — he was freed by firefighters and handed over to the doctors.

Gunars does not know who owned the car, but heard that the alleged driver might have had his license revoked for non-payment of alimony.

As previously reported, experts have already determined that none of the five passengers were wearing seat belts. The speed of the car was about 100 km/h. The car was equipped with winter tires with a tread depth of 3.5 mm, which meets the requirements until December 1.

The State Police investigation is ongoing. It is possible that on Wednesday, November 26, law enforcement went to the hospital to interrogate Gunars’ brother, as the young man had not yet given testimony by that morning.
