The object discovered the day before on the beach of Liepaja's Karosta is a drone used for air defense exercises. All signs currently indicate that it did not fly into Latvia but was washed ashore by the sea. Who launched it and where remains unknown. This should be clarified by the examination, reports TV Kurzeme.
The main purpose of such devices is to serve as targets for air defense system exercises. When information about an object resembling a drone washed ashore was received on Wednesday, it was unknown whether it could pose a danger. Once it was established that there was no danger, it was delivered to Riga for examination.
"By all indications, it is used as a target for air defense system exercises," said Roberts Skraučs, advisor to the commander of the National Armed Forces on military-public relations. The Latvian Armed Forces also use similar devices for the same purposes.
Such training targets can vary in size and be launched in different ways.
"There are no signs indicating that this drone flew to the coast of Latvia. Initial signs suggest that in this case, the drone ended up on the shore due to the waves, rather than flying in by itself," noted Roberts Skraučs.
The Liepaja City Council reported that information about the found object was received in a timely manner. "Evacuation was not required, as indicated by the facts and conclusions of specialists. Decisions could have been made from the very beginning, but of course, if a potentially explosive situation had arisen in Liepaja, we would have employed all measures provided by regulations," said the city's mayor, Gunars Ansiņš.
A more detailed examination of the drone is still pending, and it may provide answers regarding its origin and possible launch site.
