American foulbrood — one of the most dangerous bee diseases — has been detected in the Drabeši parish of the Cesis region. A threat zone has been established around the infected apiary, and specialists from the Food and Veterinary Service will conduct inspections of neighboring bee farms.

A case of American foulbrood — a dangerous infectious disease of bees that can lead to the death of entire bee colonies — has been registered in the Cesis region. According to the order of the Chief State Food and Veterinary Inspector, the disease was identified at the "Vanagi" apiary in the Drabeši parish.

As a result, the area within a three-kilometer radius around the apiary has been declared a threat zone. In the near future, specialists from the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) will begin inspecting the nearby bee farms.

Inspectors have been tasked with conducting a clinical assessment of the bee colonies, collecting suspicious samples for laboratory research, and determining whether the infection and its causative agent could have spread to other apiaries. This involves checking the entire chain of possible infection — from neighboring farms to locations that may have been connected to the infected apiary.

The work will begin once the daytime air temperature in the shade reaches at least 14 degrees Celsius. This condition is necessary for a thorough examination of the bee colonies. Apiary owners located in the threat zone are required to comply with the FVS's demands and cooperate with inspectors during the inspections.

American foulbrood is caused by the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae. The disease affects bee brood and is considered one of the most severe infections in beekeeping.

The disease poses no danger to humans; however, it can have catastrophic consequences for bee colonies if measures to contain the infection are not taken in a timely manner.

This is also important for consumers, as the health of bees is directly linked not only to honey production but also to the pollination of agricultural crops. Therefore, every case of American foulbrood is under special control by veterinary services.

In addition to ecological risks, the disease can cause significant economic damage to beekeepers due to the death of bee colonies and reduced production volumes.

Now specialists will need to determine whether the infection is limited to one apiary or if the disease has spread beyond the initial focus.
