The volume of rail freight transport in Latvia in the first four months of this year decreased by 17.9% compared to the same period of 2025 and amounted to 2.469 million tons, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.
The volume of international transport in the first four months of 2026 amounted to 1.963 million tons, which is 20.3% less compared to the same period last year. The volume of domestic transport decreased by 7.3% to 506 thousand tons.
According to the ministry's information, the volume of transit cargo in the first four months of 2026 amounted to 1.643 million tons, which is 14.7% less than in the same period of 2025.
Of this, the volume of rail transit through the ports amounted to 1.375 million tons, which is 14.4% less than a year earlier. Land transit through the territory of Latvia amounted to 268 thousand tons, decreasing by 16.3%.
Data also shows that export transport in the first four months of this year amounted to 207 thousand tons, which is 47.7% less compared to the same period of 2025. Import transport amounted to 1.488 million tons, a decrease of 14.8%.
It was previously reported that in 2025, the volume of rail freight transport in Latvia decreased by 17.6% compared to 2024 and amounted to 9.454 million tons. In the most successful years, the volume of freight transport by LDz was 45 million tons per year.
