Builders of the European infrastructure project Rail Baltica, meeting with representatives of the Iecava residents' councils, spoke about the upcoming works, including the construction of a separate railway section, reports Bauskas Dzīve.

"There is currently no information on when the rail laying on the main route will begin. However, a separate railway section is planned to be built from the current station in Iecava to the Rail Baltica logistics center to deliver materials to the construction site. This will relieve the A7 road, as gravel from Norway will be delivered by sea to the port and then by rail to the Iecava station," said U. Zagers, summarizing the plans.

As previously reported by the NRA portal, this year construction works on the main route of Rail Baltica in the Baltic countries have begun on 43% of the corridor. "This is the result of the joint efforts of all project participants — planning, design, land acquisition, and the conclusion of construction contracts in previous stages have brought us to this moment," stated the chairman of the board and CEO of RB Rail, Marko Kivils.

The cost of the first phase of Rail Baltica in the Baltic countries may reach €14.3 billion, of which €5.5 billion is in Latvia; however, taking into account indexing, the amount may increase to six billion euros.

According to the cost-benefit analysis, the total cost of the project may amount to up to €23.8 billion. In the previous analysis in 2017, the estimate was €5.8 billion.
