The transit of Russian grain through Latvia in the first quarter of this year increased by 2.7 times compared to the first quarter of 2025, the State Revenue Service (SRS) reported to the LETA agency, LETA writes.
In the transit from Russia through Latvia in the first quarter of 2026, 139,400 tons of grain products were transported, which is 2.7 times more than in the same period of 2025, when 52,655 tons of grain were transported through Latvia.
Of the total volume of grain transported in transit through Latvia in the first quarter, 133,694 tons were wheat and a mixture of wheat and rye, 4,493 tons were rapeseed or canola seeds, 1,146 tons were buckwheat, millet, and sorghum, 40.7 tons were rice, 15 tons were grain sorghum, and 10.1 tons were corn.
Compared to the first quarter of 2025, the transit of wheat and the mixture of wheat and rye in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 2.6 times, the transit of rapeseed or canola seeds increased by 2.7 times, and the transit of buckwheat, millet, and sorghum increased by 7.4 times. At the same time, the transit of rice decreased threefold, and corn decreased fourfold. Grain sorghum was not transported in transit through Latvia in the first quarter of 2025.
The State Revenue Service (SRS) notes that according to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations from March 5, 2024, which prohibit the import of certain agricultural and feed products, grain products from Russia were not imported into Latvia this year and last year.
As previously reported, in 2025, 673,491 tons of grain products were transported in transit from Russia through Latvia, which is 2.9 times less than in 2024, when the transit volume was 1.945 million tons.
