Estonians have lost their national product. Now it will be made in Latvia and under a different name

After the sale of the factory in Põltsamaa, the production of the popular Estonian Põltsamaa hot mustard in tubes, which has been produced in Estonia for 65 years, will cease this month, reported Maaleht.

Mustard production will be moved to Latvia, and it will be marketed under the Felix brand after the parent company Orkla Eesti decided in the fall to sell the Põltsamaa business and brand to focus on strategic product groups.

"Unfortunately, mustard production in Põltsamaa will not continue," said Sven Voites in a conversation with Maaleht, whose company Svensky Kaubanduse acquired the factory. He added that Orkla will produce mustard at its facility using the same recipe.

Orkla Eesti's manager Kaido Kaare stated that the buyer is taking over the production complex, brand, products, and employment contracts of the workers, while Põltsamaa will continue to supply Orkla with other products, such as vegetable marinades.

The production of Põltsamaa hot mustard began in 1961. A total of about 60 million tubes have been sold, which is nearly a million tubes per year. The majority of Põltsamaa products were consumed in the domestic market, with only small volumes exported.

Overall mustard consumption in Estonia has increased in recent years from 89 tons in 2020 to 96.7 tons in 2024.
