Fuel Supplies Lasting Until the End of May: EU Airlines Begin Canceling Flights

Europe has six weeks' worth of aviation fuel supplies left, said Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, in an interview with the AP.

Birol described the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as "the largest energy crisis we have ever faced."

"In Europe, we have fuel for airplanes left for about six weeks. If we cannot open the Strait of Hormuz... I can say that soon we will hear news that some flights from City A to City B may be canceled due to fuel shortages," he said.

The wait was not long. Next month, KLM is canceling eighty round trips within Europe that the airline operates several times a day, such as to London and Düsseldorf. This was reported by NOS.

In its statement, KLM notes that this affects flights that are currently impossible to operate profitably due to rising aviation fuel prices. Previously, the airline had already introduced a fuel surcharge of 100 euros for long-haul flights and 10 euros for flights within Europe.

The first cancellations will take place in the last week of April, just in time for the May holidays.
