Echo of War in the Middle East: Public Transport in the EU Capital May Increase by 40 Percent

In Romania, a proposal to increase the fare for public transport in the capital Bucharest by 40% is beginning to be coordinated. This is reported by Digi24.

The Bucharest metro operator Metrorex has proposed raising the fare by approximately 40% starting May 1, with the corresponding rates already appearing in the draft order of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

According to the draft, a one-way ticket for the metro will increase from 4.5 lei to 6.5 lei (from €0.88 to €1.27), a 'daily' ticket will rise from 11 lei to 16 lei (from €2.16 to €3.14). A monthly pass will go up from 90 lei to 126 lei (from €17.65 to €24.71).

Metrorex expects that the fare increase will boost monthly revenue by more than 10 million lei (around €2 million).

The last time the fares for public transport in Bucharest increased was in January 2025, also by approximately 40%.

It is worth noting that several European countries, including Latvia, have reduced fuel excise taxes to mitigate prices amid the rapid rise in diesel and gasoline costs due to the war in the Middle East.
