Bangladesh wants the U.S. to allow it to buy oil from Russia.
Bangladesh will ask the United States for permission to import Russian oil. This was reported by The Daily Star (DS).
The corresponding request will be sent from Dhaka to Washington. As stated by Bangladesh's Minister of Finance and Planning, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, since India has received permission to purchase Russian energy resources, Bangladesh should receive a similar sanction.
The publication reminded that in early 2022, Bangladesh attempted to purchase Russian oil but abandoned the idea after it became clear that the only oil refinery in the country was not equipped to process Urals grade oil. This facility was designed to handle hydrocarbons from the Middle East. However, in December 2025, a project was approved that envisions an expansion of the refinery's capacity to enable it to process Russian oil as well.
Meanwhile, the situation at the gas stations in the country remains tense, although the government has increased fuel supplies. The association of dealers, distributors, agents, and gas station owners in Bangladesh has demanded the placement of military personnel alongside police at gas stations to ensure safety, warning that stations may be forced to close if effective measures are not taken.
According to the U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, the resumption of Russian oil imports by this BRICS country will help stabilize the price situation in the global energy market and compensate for the negative effects of supply disruptions from the Middle East.
