Cargoes of Russian origin accounted for almost 22% of transport on the Latvian railway last year, while cargoes of Belarusian origin made up 9% of the total cargo volume, representatives of the state-owned company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz) told the LETA agency.
The company indicated that the largest volume of transported cargo in 2025 by country of origin came from Russia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Estonia.
Compared to 2024, the volume of Russian cargo decreased by more than half — by 51%, while the volume of Belarusian cargo decreased by 16%, the company noted.
According to LDz, Russia and Belarus are the only countries where the volume of rail transport has decreased. The reduction in cargo transportation volume has been driven for several years by international sanctions imposed against Russia and Belarus. Furthermore, the sanctions are constantly tightening as the number of individuals and legal entities falling under sanctions increases, additional restrictions on the turnover of goods are introduced, as well as restrictions on the activities of financial institutions.
As previously reported by LETA, the turnover of the LDz group last year, according to preliminary data, amounted to 201.189 million euros, which is 13.9% less than in 2024, while the group's losses decreased fivefold — to 7.823 million euros.
At the same time, the turnover of LDz itself in 2025 amounted to 142.549 million euros, which is 8.1% less than in 2024. The turnover of LDz last year before payments for ensuring financial balance was 118.051 million euros, and losses were 25.678 million euros.
Last year, the public infrastructure of LDz was used for the transportation of 9.454 million tons of cargo, which is 17.6% less than the previous year, and 21.334 million passengers, which is 9.7% more.
During the reorganization last year, the subsidiary of LDz — LLC "LDz Cargo" — merged in October 2025 with the subsidiaries of LDz — LLC "LDz ritošā sastāva serviss" and LLC "LDz loģistika". The LDz group also includes "LatRailNet", which is responsible for establishing infrastructure charges and distributing the capacity of the railway infrastructure, as well as the security company "LDz apsardze."
