Owner of Politico and Business Insider buys The Telegraph newspaper for £575 million

The Axel Springer media group has reached an agreement to purchase the British publication The Telegraph for £575 million in cash. This was reported by Axel Springer's press service.

After the deal is finalized, one of the oldest British newspapers, which has close ties to the Conservative Party, will be owned by a media group from Germany that owns Politico, Business Insider, as well as the German newspapers Bild and Die Welt.

"Both parties believe that this agreement has compelling advantages: it will preserve the integrity of a traditional media brand and provide it with an exciting platform for growth and expansion into other regions, while ensuring a commitment to high-quality, independent journalism and media pluralism in the UK," said Axel Springer in a statement.

The new owner plans to support the investment program of Telegraph Media Group and accelerate its expansion into the US market using the expertise of Politico and Business Insider. The agreement still needs to be approved by the British government and regulator.

"More than 20 years ago, we tried to acquire The Telegraph, but unsuccessfully. Now our dream has come true. To be the owner of this institution of quality British journalism is a privilege and a responsibility," said Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner.

The newspaper has been without a permanent owner for about three years. Bloomberg noted that the owner of the Daily Mail reached an agreement to purchase the Telegraph group in November 2025, after the American private investment firm RedBird Capital Partners withdrew its offer due to negative employee reactions.

However, the £500 million offer was delayed after the Labour government initiated regulatory reviews of the proposed deal in February.
