QatarEnergy has suspended liquefied gas production due to Iranian strikes. Gas prices in Europe have risen by 50%.
Qatar's state energy company QatarEnergy has suspended liquefied natural gas production following the Iranian attack on its facilities, the company stated, as reported by Meduza.
On March 2, Iranian drones struck a gas facility in the city of Ras Laffan and another facility in the city of Mesaieed. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, the Qatari Ministry of Defense reported.
Qatar is one of the largest exporters of liquefied natural gas in the world. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, this country accounts for approximately 20% of the world's LNG exports. QatarEnergy is one of the largest LNG producers globally.
Following QatarEnergy's announcement, gas prices in Europe surged by nearly 50%. According to Al Jazeera, this increase affected the base wholesale gas prices in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Iran is attacking Israel and U.S. bases in Middle Eastern countries in response to strikes from the U.S. and Israel. Civilian infrastructure in the Gulf countries is also being targeted by Iranian shelling.
