In Latvian ports, 2.613 million tons of cargo were handled in January this year, which is 16% less than in January 2025, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The highest volume of cargo handled in January was bulk cargo - 1.322 million tons (+6.4%), including grains and grain products - 479,000 tons (-21%), wood chips - 272,900 tons (+2.1%), coal - 10,000 tons, and chemical cargo - 21,600 tons (-57.1%).
General cargo handling in January amounted to 902,100 tons (-19.1%), including containerized cargo - 358,600 tons (-17.7%), timber - 277,800 tons (-34.6%), and roll on/roll off cargo - 244,100 tons (-2%).
Liquid cargo handled in January this year in Latvian ports totaled 388,900 tons (-48.4%). The majority consisted of petroleum products - 304,900 tons (-56.7%).
The leader in cargo handling volume in January this year was still the Port of Riga - 1.413 million tons (-4.3%). The cargo turnover of the Port of Liepaja was 531,800 tons (+2.2%), and Ventspils - 474,000 tons (-46.1%).
Among small ports, the highest cargo turnover in January was at the port of Skulte - 105,900 tons (+5.6%). This was followed by Salacgriva - 42,800 tons (-23.2%) and Mersrags - 37,700 tons (-47.3%).
Overall, small ports handled 194,400 tons of cargo in January 2026, which is 17.1% less than in January 2025.
As reported, last year the cargo turnover of Latvian ports amounted to 34.281 million tons, which is 4.8% less than in 2024.
