Is it over with the pirates? Maersk is returning its fleet to the Red Sea

The Danish shipping company Maersk announced that it will resume the movement of vessels in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal as part of the MECL service, connecting the Middle East and India with the east coast of the United States.

"Maersk has decided to implement a structural return to the trans-Suez route for all services of the MECL," the statement said.

The company described the structural change in the MECL operations as an important milestone in the gradual resumption of transportation through the Suez Canal.

The first voyage as part of the resumption of traffic will take place on January 26 from Oman.

At the same time, Maersk will continue to closely monitor the security situation in the Middle East.

The Suez Canal provides the shortest route between Europe and Asia. More than two years ago, after Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, shipping companies began to avoid it. Prior to that, about 10% of global maritime shipments passed through the Suez Canal.
