Volkswagen Halts Production at German Plant for the First Time in History

On Tuesday, the German automotive group Volkswagen halted production at one of its plants in Germany for the first time in the company's history, as the automaker is forced to cut costs, LETA reports, citing DPA.

On Tuesday, a red electric vehicle ID.3 GTX rolled off the assembly line at the Dresden plant, becoming the last car produced at this facility.

Thus, the Dresden plant became the first in Volkswagen's 88-year history to completely cease production.

The plant began operations in 2001, and until 2016, it produced the luxury sedan Phaeton. In 2017, production of the e-Golf model began, and the plant became the first Volkswagen site to fully transition to electric vehicle production. Since 2021, only the ID.3 model has been produced here.

Over the years, more than 165,500 vehicles have been manufactured at the Dresden plant.

Volkswagen stated that the site will be transformed into a research and development center focused on microchips, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Over time, approximately half of the former production facilities will be occupied by the Technical University of Dresden.
