Americans will also build a nuclear storage facility and mini-reactors.
U.S. nuclear fuel and IBM digital technologies will be used in the construction of new energy blocks at the Paks nuclear power plant as part of expanded international cooperation, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó reported.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary and the United States will sign an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
The document provides for the supply of American fuel to the Paks nuclear power plant in addition to products from Russia.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that cooperation with the U.S. also involves the use of American technologies for the construction of a new storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, as well as the construction of small modular reactors.
According to the minister, IBM will participate in the implementation of digital technologies at the Paks nuclear power plant.
"Thus, we can now say that there is real participation of American corporations in the construction of new blocks of the nuclear power plant in Paks," Szijjártó said.
Hungary is also counting on the extension of the exemption of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant project from U.S. sanctions, granted by U.S. President Donald Trump in June. The exemption is set to expire in December, and Budapest hopes for its extension after discussions.
Earlier, the competent authority in Hungary issued a permit for the pouring of the first concrete for the Paks-2 nuclear power plant.
The Russian government stated that the pouring of the first concrete for the foundation of the plant, which is being built according to Rosatom's project, will begin in Hungary soon.
Hungary decided to accelerate the construction project due to attempts to disrupt it.
