Grain from Russia No Longer Passes Through Latvia: A Fourfold Decline

The transit of Russian grain through Latvia in the first nine months of this year decreased by 4.3 times compared to the first nine months of 2024, the LETA agency was informed by the State Revenue Service (SRS).

In the first nine months of 2025, 323,103 tons of grain products were transited from Russia through Latvia, which is 4.3 times less than in the first nine months of 2024, when 1.391 million tons of grain were transited through Latvia.

Of the transit grain products in the first nine months of 2025, 318,039 tons were wheat and a mixture of wheat and rye, 3,657 tons were rapeseed or rapeseed seeds, 764 tons were buckwheat, millet, and barley, just under 324 tons were rice, 189 tons were oats, nearly 79 tons were corn, almost 29 tons were rye, and 21 tons were barley.

Compared to the first nine months of 2024, the transit of wheat and the mixture of wheat and rye decreased threefold in the first nine months of 2025, rice by 41.3%, oats by 18.5 times, corn by 2,525 times, and buckwheat, millet, and barley by 2.9 times. On the other hand, the transit of rapeseed and rapeseed seeds increased by 25.8% compared to the first nine months of 2024.

In the first nine months, no grain products were imported from Russia, except for rapeseed or rapeseed seeds, which were imported in the amount of 15,212 tons, which is 3.4 times more than the previous year.

It has already been reported that in 2024, Latvia imported 214,800 tons of grain products from Russia, which is 49.3% less than in 2023, when 423,730 tons of grain products were imported.

Last year, the value of grain imported into Latvia from Russia amounted to 35.59 million euros, which is 2.5 times less than in 2023.

Last year, 1,877,008 tons of grain products were transported from Russia through Latvia, which is 16.3% less than in 2023, when 2,243,203 tons of grain were transported through Latvia.

Of the grain products transported in 2024, 1,441,200 tons were wheat and a mixture of wheat and rye, 199,249 tons were corn, 220,218 tons were barley, 8,708 tons were rye, 4,288 tons were oats, 2,615 tons were triticale, and 726 tons were rice.
